Plot Summary
The film begins with a prologue that explains that the human civilization is on the brink of collapse due to war and pollution. A group of scientists and engineers build an underground city called Ember, where they hope to preserve the human race for 200 years. They leave behind a metal box that contains instructions on how to return to the surface, which is set to open automatically after 200 years. However, the box is misplaced and forgotten over time.
In the present day, Ember is facing a crisis as its generator is failing and its lights are flickering. The city is also running low on food and supplies. The corrupt mayor, Cole (Bill Murray), hoards the scarce resources for himself and his cronies, while ignoring the pleas of the citizens.
The film follows two 12-year-old friends, Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway), who are assigned their jobs by a lottery. Lina becomes a messenger, while Doon becomes a pipeworker. Lina loves her job, while Doon hates his. Doon is interested in finding a way to fix the generator, while Lina is curious about the outside world.
One day, Lina finds the metal box in her grandmother's closet. She opens it and discovers that it contains a torn map with some words on it. She shows it to Doon, who recognizes it as a way out of Ember. They decide to work together to decipher the map and find the exit.
However, their quest is not easy, as they have to evade the mayor's henchman, Looper (Mackenzie Crook), who is stealing and selling the city's supplies on the black market. They also have to deal with giant moles and floods that threaten to destroy Ember. Along the way, they are helped by Lina's younger sister, Poppy (Amy Quinn), Doon's father, Loris (Tim Robbins), and Lina's friend, Lizzie (Lucinda Dryzek).
Eventually, they manage to follow the map and reach a boat that leads them to an underground river. They ride the boat through a series of tunnels and pipes until they reach a locked door. They use a key that they found in the box to open the door and emerge into the surface world. They are amazed by the sight of the sun, the sky, and the greenery. They also see that Ember's lights are visible from above as a faint glow. They realize that they are the first ones to escape from Ember and that they have to find a way to help the others.
